Thanks to its diverse ecosystem and pristine waters, the nearby Chatham Straits—just south of Angoon—is one of Earth’s precious waterways. As such, various organisms, including krill and herring, inhabit this vast and fascinating region, creating the perfect conditions for whale watching. Chatham Straits attracts different whale and marine mammal species, including humpbacks, orcas, and porpoises, providing such a plentiful food source. You’ll undoubtedly want to make sure you have a camera or binoculars for such a fantastic viewing opportunity.

Embedded in some of the clandestine coves and inlets of Admiralty, Baranof, and Chichagof Islands, you’ll find an astonishingly ample supply of Dungeness crab and delectable spot prawns. Harvest your catch using a series of well-placed traps at the mouth of productive streams. There is also a chance you won’t be the only one looking to grab a snack during this Alaska adventure. If you’re lucky, you may also come across a gang of bears feeding on salmon. During full-day trips, we’ll stop by one of the streams to place traps and then return on our way back to the lodge, where our executive chef will prepare your catch!
